Sheltered by Grace is a homeless shelter based in Logan, Brisbane. We are passionate about the transformation of lives, and do this through supported accommodation with 24-hour onsite support and a full case management program.
We currently have 12 beds on site, but are expanding in 2014 to 48 bedrooms with the addition of three new 12 bedrooms houses. We need the community’s help to build these additional buildings to provide homeless solutions to the Logan Community. If you can help with donations of building products or labour, please contact us – your help is greatly needed.
Homeless statistics across the world are increasing. In Australia, there are currently over 105,000 people who are homeless and there are many causes of homelessness: loss of a job; an accident; family separations; mental or physical health; addictions; and domestic violence to name a few. The cold hard homeless facts are that in this economic climate and increased instances of family separations, almost anyone could find themselves homeless. It really can be a very slippery slope once one finds themselves on that path.
It can be difficult to find emergency shelters and there seems to be less and less available that are helping the homeless. At Sheltered by Grace, we specialize in providing not just a roof over someone’s head, but also a pathway to find themselves and regain their life. Through our case management plan, we look at all areas of an individual’s life including: housing and food; social skills; health and wellbeing; employment; financial support; and the spiritual aspect of their lives. It is only by looking at each of these areas and considering the whole person that transformation is able to happen.
Our model is self-sustaining, and does not rely on ongoing funding or money from government – this makes us unique. We operate with the assistance of volunteers – social workers, students who are working in the social work or community service area, people who can cook or clean, people who can just have a chat and a cuppa with someone, or people who can only help one Saturday a month on a sausage sizzle stall. Generally, those who just have a heart to help the needy!
Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience and includes both physical and mental health benefits for the volunteer. It is generally only when we help others that we in fact help ourselves! I encourage you to look at the volunteer roles we have available and if you are able, come and join our team!
If you just want to get alongside and encourage people, then we also like people just to come and have a coffee or morning tea and get to know some of our clients. Although many are shy, they really appreciate people taking an interest in them.
We sometimes have functions or events like our Christmas party, Sunday afternoon entertainment and singing by youth groups, gala dinners, Parties with a Purpose and more. If you have good fundraising ideas, or just want to be involved in the Sheltered by Grace community, then please contact us through our contact form, or just keep your eyes out for our advertised events on the sbg.org.au site or on Facebook.
We are always in need of Prayer Warriors! There are many needs to be addressed in the spirit realm – if you feel called to prayer for specific people, the shelter in general or specific monthly needs we have, we’d really love to hear from you!
If you are able to donate money or goods, this is greatly appreciated. We take donations of clothing, furniture and other goods. If we have clients who are moving to their own tenancy, we like to help them out as we can with setting up their new house – and your donations are invaluable in this instance.
If you own a business and believe in corporate social responsibility, we would love for you to partner with us to achieve the goals we have for our organization to be the largest provider of supported accommodation in Australia. In addition, we can feature you on our Partners page and across the bottom of our home page.
I invite you to check out our site, like us on Facebook and come back and visit often – see the new Transformation Stories of our clients, check out where our building is up to, see what our goal is for the month, see some of the outcomes of the prayer warriors and see what new exciting news we have to tell you.
There is great need out there – many people are hurting, and they could be someone you know, your neighbour, your child, or even you one day. People need a hand up, not a handout, help us to transform lives, and together we can end homelessness!
